Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
